The modern workforce has changed significantly since 2020. First it was COVID, then it was The Great Resignation, followed by Quit Quitting, and now layoffs resulting from a recession that hasn’t materialized. It now seems that besides death and taxes, there is another thing that doesn’t change; The need to reinvent one’s career.
Finding fulfillment in our careers has almost become an unrealistic dream. Some would call it a fantasy. And yet, with all the jobs that are disappearing, new ones are replacing them just as fast. I just read that a new job title in the future will be an “AI Prompt Engineer”. It remains to be seen whether said engineer will actually need an engineering degree, but in the end it doesn’t matter. There will be that job, and someone will be good at it. Even more important, some company will pay a ton of $ for that role.
So, what does one do if they want to be an AI Prompt Engineer, or a “Virtual Store Sherpa”, or “Nano-medic”What does one do if they simply want to stop doing the mind-numbing, values-misaligning, unfulfilling, burnout-inducing, stagnating job they are currently doing? Well, the answer is the same for both scenarios…it’s time for a career change.
*Cue panicked, fear-induced screaming*
Sure, I get it. Change is scary. And change with regards to what we do with 33% of our day and what constitutes 100% of our income is even more scary. But if you want to feel fulfilled at work, have a higher level of personal and professional satisfaction, a renewed sense of purpose, or even to work for a company that values you and in which both the company and your values align…well that means it’s time for a change.
I have had four career changes over the last 30 years of my working life. All of them necessary and all of them took time, dedication, focus, and work.
